Hence, this thesis systematically studies the SLM of an advanced Al-Al2O3 nanocomposite that is synthesised using high-energy ball-milling (HEBM) process. The aim of this study is to use SLM to fabricate a nearly full dense Al-Al2O3 nanocomposite composed of 96 vol.% Al and 4 vol.% Al2O3 powder. The synthesis and characterisation of ball-milled powder is the first contribution of this study.
This dissertation presents a nanocomposite approach to design the next generation neural prosthetic devices. The rationally designed nanocomposite can achieve the combination of the desired material properties for neural prosthetic devices, currently unattainable by traditional materials.
This thesis broadly aims to design reconfigurable materials through complementary combinations of nanoparticles and polymers. Understanding nanoparticle dispersion pathways and mechanisms is a critical first step in any polymer nanocomposite work as it continues to be a non-trivial subject. To this end, Chapter 2 describes a simple method to control nanoparticle dispersion within polymer melts.

Total joint replacement (TJR) is commonly used for the treatment of end stage arthritis. The use of Poly-methylmethacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is a gold standard TJR, where it is frequently used for local delivery of antibiotics to provide prophylaxis from prosthetic joint infections (PJI). Currently used antibiotic loaded bone cements have many limitations, including burst release which fall.
The shear fracture surface in the nanocomposite after it has undergone a ballistic impact is characterized. Additional experiments are performed to characterize the interlaminar fracture stresses and toughnesses of the nanocomposite LBL layers, to assist in the implementation of a numerical crack band model that describes the nanocomposite film. The computational model predicts the failure of.
